AMOR FATI- LOVE OF ONE’S FATE
APRIL 14, 2023
ALL ABOUT COLLECTION IV
What does it mean to love one’s fate? Many creatives might be able to relate to the pressures of having to put out work consistently and having life throw uncontrollable circumstances your way; however, we believe that taking breaks is a necessary part of the creative process, and the comeback is always stronger! In recent weeks Vrede has taken a step back to rediscover ourselves as a brand, our fundamental interests, values, inspirations, and culture. This is our first collection since 2021 because we took time off to rediscover ourselves in 2022.
Taking inspiration from our core ethos as a brand, we have created pieces that are educational and also highlight our strengths. We wanted to describe ourselves differently, even culturally. Specific pieces such as our “Afri Jacket,” made out of Italian denim, consists of chain stitched embroidery of the map of Africa, indicating two of our greatest loves and building blocks of the brand. The African Map and use of denim symbolize where we come from and where we are headed because, to understand your future, you must pay attention to your history: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbI41xty0d0&t=2s
Denim is a frequent feature in our collections; every collection has a staple denim piece. We see ourselves as denim innovators and want to make our mark in Africa and beyond. Being extremely passionate about our heritage, we incorporate certain design elements that pay respectful homage to our culture. One of the pieces in this collection takes inspiration from Fulani techniques using embroidery to form a flower motif on a shirt called “Solaris”. Embroidery in Northern Nigeria has a long and rich history that dates back to the 1970s, the Hausa people are known for their beautiful Babban Riga robes, and the Fulanis are widely recognized for their richly embroidered tunics.
