THE NEW NIGERIA TEE

The New Nigeria Tee was created in collaboration with Olga Guarch, a Spanish artist. The aim of this T-shirt is to define the ongoing issues in Nigeria i.e. Police Brutality, the lack of Women in Science & technology, and inadequate entrepreneurship resources, to reimagine what a “New Nigeria” would look like, and lastly, to actively work towards it together. There is power in unity however, identification and acceptance are the first steps we need to take collectively. Despite these issues, Vrēde 919 is and will always be proudly Nigerian.

THE AFRICAN BAND TEE

This Tee is our take on a African Band Graphic Tee, which is a concept that is popular amongst western rock bands and so on. We decided to focus on a once popular Ghanian Band “Edzayawa”. During the 1970’s prevalent Nigerian Rock scene, a band of young Ghanaians titled “Edzayawa” emerged. Their first and only LP “projection one: was released in 1973 by EMI Nigeria. The release of this LP was very strategic and synonymous to the time when Osibisa and Fela Kuti’s influences were being felt and recognized across west Africa.

THE AFRO FUNK TEE

The Afro Funk Tee pays homage to one of Nigeria’s most talented artist from the 70’s, Joni Haastrup. Joni is known as “Soul Brother Number One” in Nigeria, which is a title he received in 1966, after singing in one of the formative Afro-Beat albums — Orlando Julius Ekemode and his Modern Aces' Super Afro Soul. Joni. It has been said that his solo debut single “Wake Up Your Mind” is popularly known and its significance stamped him to be a prominent figure in the Afto-Funk scene.

Joni is also the son of a Yoruba King and is known to have reigned in his own way through music around the 60’s to 80’s.

Join us as we tap into and celebrate a legacy driven aspect of Nigerian Music known as “Afro- Funk.”

THE AFRICANISM TEE

This Tee features an art illustration by a Nigerian artist. It is also bordered by the African Map, promoting “Pan- Africanism.”

Pan- Africanism is a principle that was created to unite people of African descent whether they live inside or outside of Africa. This is a principle we strongly believe in and encourage Africans worldwide to adopt.

An excerpt from the article resource, “For Harriet”:

“In a historical context, Pan-Africanism served as both a cultural and political ideology for the solidarity of peoples of African descent. Most notably championed and pioneered by Marcus Garvey, Jomo Kenyatta, and Kwame Nkrumah, Pan-Africanism aims to connect and understand the universal injustices within the Diaspora.”
